Brave New World

The selection talked about the reproduction of children. The place is Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, there the Director fertilize eggs to make embryos, thousands of embryos. The embryos will soon become babies. After birth, conditioning starts, the Director conditions the babies by showing roses and books. After he shows them the roses and books he them administers shock treatment and loud noise which makes the babies not like roses and books when they see them a second time. To me the place seems a little "mad scientist" style. They are producing a score of babies that are identical twins and they call them the bokanovskified egg. How strange is that?

Tutoring Experience

I didn't get a chance to observe a tutoring session because the appointment didn't show up. I read a chapter in "The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring" Chapter 1 p 1-11 Why We Tutor. This chapter was about different students expressing their tutoring experiences. At first some of the students didn't understand why their teachers volunteered them for tutoring. As the various student began to tutor more, the more they began to understand tutoring. Tutoring is not just being a proofreader but more of a person that helps a person understand different ways of writing.

Stephen Jay Gould "Nonmoral Nature: p 597

In this selection the author questions morality of "carnivorous races p. 600". He talks about the ichneumon wasps and how they feed off their prey. There are different types of ichneumon wasps: Planicips hirsutus, Physsella curvipes and Pseudorhyssa to name a few. The ichneumon wasp is a parasite that uses a ovipositor to insert its eggs into a larvae. This parasite feeds on its prey inside out keeping its prey alive while it eats. The question of morality came into play when Gould discussed the natural of the ichneumon wasp. It deposited its eggs into a larvae and in there the larvae would grow and began to feast. By the ichneumon wasp begin natural and part of Gods creation (God being goodness), how did the ichneumon wasp fit into the plan of God's morality?

This selection was very difficult to read to me. Before I began to read the selection I thought it was going to be familiar information because I remembered the topic of natural selection from biology but that wasn't the case. While some information was understandable to me most seem foreign. When I began to read I was confused and didn't really understand the information because of all the metaphors. I did get a little understanding from a couple of points: sexual selection and variations in the different birds. Sexual selection was describing how certain animals are attracted to the stronger male and weak animals will not survive. Variations in the birds depended on their environment. A bird needing a strong short beak would be born with on because that's what the environment called for.

Chapter 7: Helping Writers Across the Curriculum

Chapter 7 gives you information on the different types of papers you might come across in tutoring. Examples: Research papers, lab reports, scientific papers, resumes, power point presentations, argument or position papers, and literature papers just to name a few. In a research paper we as the tutor must make use that the students has proper/correct documentation. They must also have a good thesis, title page, and logical organization. You must also be aware of the type of style writing that the student must following, ex. APA or MLA format. Even though you might not be knowledgeable with the topic you still can help with the writing aspects of the paper which is tone, organization, and grammar.
